For Immediate Release: March 19, 2008

Positive Action Registers on California Department of Education Student Assistance Programs Database

CORVALLIS, Ore. – Carol Gerber Allred, President/Developer of the Positive Action program, is pleased to announce that the Positive Action program is recommended for Student Assistance Programs through the California Department of Education, only one of two programs that met the database’s criteria for effectiveness.

According to a recent California Student Survey alcohol or drug use by California students increase significantly in the middle and high school years. The goals of California Student Assistance Programs are to reduce students’ behavioral and disciplinary violations and substance use habits while improving school attendance and academic performance. Positive Action is an evidence-based program focused on character development and academic improvement, which has proven effective in both prevention and intervention strategies for youth.

Dr. Allred said that Positive Action teaches “young people physical, intellectual, emotional, and social positive actions, which foster academic achievement, avoidance of addictive substances, improved social and emotional behaviors, a stronger self-concept, better mental health practices, and healthy relationships with peers, teachers, parents that are foundational for achievement and a responsible connection to the community.”

Positive Action is an evidence-based program that received top marks by the U.S. Department of Education What Works Clearinghouse (WWC). Positive Action received “strong evidence of positive effect,” the highest marks of any program in the United States in academics and improved behaviors. The program is also on approved programs lists such as Safe and Drug-Free Schools, Title 1, the Office of Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention, and National Registry of Evidence-based Programs and Practices.

Positive Action has been providing programs for over 13,000 schools for the last 25 years both nationally and internationally and has offices in Corvallis, Ore. and Twin Falls, Idaho.
