Evidence-based for Improving Academics

Positive Action’s evidence of effectiveness for improving academic achievement is among the best in the nation. It has been recognized by the U.S. Department of Education What Works Clearinghouse (WWC) for having “positive effects,” the highest level of methodological rigor, on improving academic achievement (average of improvements in math and reading scores and reductions in grade retentions and absenteeism).

Read about new findings that support this recognition, and even show increased improvement, from a randomized experimental study published in the January 2010 edition of the Journal of Research on Educational Effectiveness. Results include 20.7% improvement in reading scores and 51.4% improvement in math scores on state standardized tests. Positive Action works regardless of the math or reading program used.

Positive Action improves achievement test scores and closes the academic gap with a three-part approach: academics pyramid

  • It teaches the prerequisite skills for learning, such as how to think critically and solve problems.
  • It helps build intrinsic motivation.
  • It improves behavior in the classroom and school, allowing teachers and students more time-on-task to teach and learn in a safe environment.

Evidence-based for Improving Behavior

Not only does WWC credit Positive Action with “positive effects” in academics, but it also gave the program the same top rating for behavioral outcomes. Positive Action was the only “character education” program found to improve behavior (alcohol, tobacco, and other drug use, violence, and suspensions). Read an article confirming these findings, from a randomized experimental study in Hawaii, published in the American Journal of Public Health (June 2009).

Is Easy to Use

Positive Action has an engaging PreK–12 curriculum with fully-prepared, 15-minute lessons. They use a variety of methodologies and employ colorful posters and other interactive elements. Kits include 30 sets of all student materials and are ready to go—which teachers appreciate.

Supplemental components make it suitable for all tiers of need and focus, including kits for developing a positive school-wide climate, kits for supplementing regular lessons with drug prevention and conflict resolution lessons, and special kits for families, counselors, and communities.

All components are based on a common-sense philosophy that unites participants at every level with a shared vision and common language. The components can be combined or used separately.

Consolidates and Is Cost-Effective

A common problem for educators today is that multiple initiatives compete and overlap. Positive Action’s coherent approach allows schools to consolidate efforts and resources to improve academics, behavior, and character—and it is evidence-based for all three areas so schools can count on results. In a time when schools must do more with less, using one proven program for many purposes is smart resource management, improving efficiency and effectiveness while providing a unified approach.

Positive Action is also affordable. It can be implemented for just $13/student for the first year and $3/student for successive years—with only minimal training.
