From: Ricardo Lopez, Healthy Start Project Coordinator, Woodrow Wilson High School/El Sereno Middle School/Farmdale Elementary School, Los Angeles Unified School District, Local District 5, Los Angeles, CA
Since July 2008, Farmdale Elementary School, El Sereno Middle School and Wilson High School have successfully implemented the Positive Action curriculum/program. We selected this science-based program/curriculum because it was aligned with our goals to reduce and eliminate School Violence; decrease bullying; gang involvement,; drug, alcohol, and tobacco use; and to increase achievement and attendance, while improving character. We also selected Positive Action because it is designed to work with parents, school administrators and community members. This is a holistic approach to reaching our goal and objectives.
Our teachers from the elementary school to the high school have enjoyed implementing Positive Active for numerous reasons. First, the school staff enjoys the program because it focuses on developing and providing students with pro-social skills that they can carry for a lifetime. In addition, the staff has found Positive Action to be well designed and easy to implement. This is important given the time constraints and demands of the district. Based on our local evaluation, we have seen significant improvements in student behaviors at all three schools.
Teachers have also noted that in using the Positive Action program we have united all three feeder schools by having increased parent participation. This has translated into a better communication between parents, students and teachers. This has impacted not only the school community but also the community at large.
