Positive Action Helps Compton Schools Become “California Distinguished Schools”
From: Saunya Ingersoll, Compton Unified School District, Compton, CA
In 2004, we began implementing Positive Action in three grade levels, 4th, 7th, and 9th. Teachers on these levels reported changes in behavior, academics, and attendance, all improved. Between 2004 and 2009 we have adopted the program for all schools and grades, K-12.
Since beginning Positive Action we have had two schools, Bunche Elementary and Bursch Elementary, become California Distinguished Schools, with another one, Tibby Elementary (with best attendance at 90-95% and lower discipline in the district) well on its way to being the third California Distinguished School in Compton. We are pleased because the schools who are implementing Positive Action at a higher level are definitely showing good results in academics, behavior, and school climate including feeling safe at school and reduced bullying and violence.
