Introduction to Use of Positive Action Family Kit During the COVID 19 Pandemic
It is with bittersweet emotions we that announce that we are providing the Positive Action Family Kit digitally free online for everyone. It is bitter because of the conditions under which we take this step—the COVID-19 pandemic crisis. Never did we think that there would be such an occasion but it is sweet because it has offered us the wonderful opportunity to provide this amazing tool to a wider audience—all of you.
As we witnessed the devastation that was taking place across our nation, we immediately thought of the Family Kit as the perfect resource to help families weather this storm. It has been a boon for families for over 25 years but it is particularly necessary now. Why? Because it meets the biggest need we currently have—to know how to positively cope with the challenges the virus has created.
The beauty of the Family Kit is that it deals with our whole selves: physical, intellectual, social and emotional, all of which are affected in this crisis. It also has strategies on how to use it personally, as a family, a parent and as a community member—again, all of which are pertinent now.
The Family Kit is easy to use—just read it and follow the instructions. As you will see, it is all about being positive and follows the basic philosophy of Positive Action that you feel good about yourself when you do positive actions and there is a positive way to do everything—even in a global pandemic.
The practical application is the Thoughts-Actions-Feelings about self Circle. The Circle illustrates that a positive thought leads to positive action, which leads to another positive thought. The Circle is self-reinforcing and can be positive or negative, however, the positive circle is preferable because it leaves you feeling good about yourself rather than negative; everyone wants to feel good about themselves.
The structure of the manual has six units that teach the positive actions for the physical, intellectual, social and emotional areas. The lessons are laid out in three steps: Step One - the positive thought, Step Two - the positive action and Step 3 - the positive feeling you receive by doing that particular positive action. In Step Two, it explains how to use that specific positive action for yourself, your family, as a parent and as a community member. You can choose the strategies that apply most to you or best of all for the whole family, you do them all.
Many materials are called for in the Family Kit, which unfortunately we cannot provide those online so we leave it up to you to improvise. These can be a fun activities in and of themselves. The activities are described and planned for you—just what you need under these conditions. The content to think, and act positively so you will feel good about yourself is the exact antidote for this crisis situation. It is universal and works for all of us, however, we suggest that you adapt it (always keeping it positive) to account for your culture and this COVID-19 moment.
The manual includes activities and celebrations and we suggest that you go all out and do everything with enthusiasm. You probably have the time, so make the most of it. You will see amazing changes soon and you will find that the more you do the more you will want to do because it helps you receive what you need the most now, the confidence to get through this crisis positively—you can do!
